One of the most interesting transformations in the history of first-person shooters is not simply the transition from 2D to 3D graphics. It is a change in what constitutes the center of the game world.
From Wolfenstein 3D to Half-Life 2, the FPS gradually moves from a space constructed around the player to a world in which the player appears to be situated within an independently existing environment.
In this sense, the evolution can be understood as a kind of Copernican revolution in virtual space.
Wolfenstein 3D: the world projected by the player
In Wolfenstein 3D (1992), the level is essentially a two-dimensional map. Raycasting transforms that map into a 3D image according to the player's position and direction.
The world therefore exists as 3D primarily from the player's point of view. Its apparent depth is produced by projection rather than by a fully 3D geometry.
This has consequences for scale. Walls, corridors and rooms do not need to obey a coherent 3D metric. They need to be recognizable and functional for navigation.
The player is effectively the center of the spatial representation.
Doom: space built around gameplay
Doom (1993) greatly expands the spatial possibilities of the FPS, introducing different floor heights, stairs, platforms and more complex environments.
Yet its spaces remain fundamentally designed around the player's activity. Rooms and corridors can be enormous because they need to accommodate movement and combat.
The environment is therefore still primarily a stage for the player.
The question is not yet, “How large would this place be in reality?”, but rather, “How large does this space need to be for the player to play?”
Unreal: towards an autonomous world
Unreal (May 1998) pushes this tendency further by treating environments as places with their own architectural identity and internal coherence.
Its spaces are still designed for gameplay, but their size and look increasingly suggest a world that extends beyond the immediate path of the player.
The level becomes less of an arena and more of an environment.
The distinction is subtle but fundamental: instead of designing a world and then measuring it according to the player, developers increasingly design a world with its own spatial logic and place the player inside it.
Half-Life: the world already exists
With Half-Life (November 1998), this relationship begins to change.
Black Mesa is presented not merely as a sequence of playable spaces, but as a functioning facility. Laboratories, offices, industrial areas and infrastructure suggest a world with purposes that exist independently of the player's presence.
Scale consequently becomes relational. A desk establishes the scale of a room; a human establishes the scale of a doorway; machinery establishes the scale of an industrial space.
The environment begins to feel like a place that existed before the player entered it.
This is a crucial conceptual shift: the player is no longer the implicit reason for the world's existence.
Half-Life 2: the player becomes part of the world
With Half-Life 2 (2004), the transformation reaches a remarkable degree of maturity.
Objects have not only dimensions but also physical properties. A chair, bottle, crate or door has a recognizable scale, mass and relationship to the surrounding environment. Through physics and interaction, the player experiences these properties directly.
The player is no longer simply the reference point from which the world is rendered. They are a body inhabiting the world.
That is why the gradual disappearance of absurdly oversized objects in FPS games is more than a matter of graphical fidelity. It reflects a deeper change in the ontology of game space.
